Ruth Axtell Morren gained her first recognition as a writer when she made the finals in the Romance Writers of America Golden Heart Contest while living in the Netherlands with her husband. In Holland Ruth crafted her first serious story in between having her three children and tending the small "brickyard" garden of their townhouse in the Netherlands. "Now the scenery is quite different on the downeast coast of Maine. After three years away, there has been a lot of weeding and tilling to do. But a garden with good bones comes through. Our yard is surrounded by forest on three sides, mainly balsam fir and spruce. The yard has several gnarled old apple trees, but still bear the best apples for pie and applesauce.
